Davis painted Billie Holiday to memorialize her creativity and contributions to jazz. Also as an icon of the Harlem Renaissance Holiday took art to new meanings by addressing the good, the bad, and the ugly in her music. She perfectly aligns with Davis’s portraits of people who achieve despite adversity.
